Hormonal acne treatment
When an adult is still suffering from acne, chances are it isn’t typical “teenage acne” they’re dealing with but instead a form of hormonal acne. When a woman has an elevated amount of androgens in her blood, she is probably dealing with this form. A condition that can cause it is called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome causes skin and hair changes such as pimples, increased facial hair (especially on the chin, neck and upper lip) and hair thinning on the head. It also can cause, irregular periods and weight gain.
If you’re experiencing pimples as an adult, it’s probably a good idea to get checked for this condition, just to be informed. A blood test to check hormonal levels is the first step in treating this form. There are many effective hormonal cures as soon as the doctor knows exactly what he’s dealing with.
One of the first steps in these cures is good hygiene. It’s important to keep the skin clean with a “soap free” cleanser and an application of benzoyl peroxide. This is important to do daily to keep the skin in good condition. Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) help some women with hormonal acne as the pills lower the levels of free testosterone in the body which in turn helps control the acne.
Oral antibiotics or antibiotic creams are helpful with clearing up the skin too. Another of the successful hormonal cures commonly used is the use of additional medications that block testosterone, such as spironolactone. These types of medications can be used successfully to help clear up the skin sometimes with dramatic results.
A last resort treatment is Accutane. This is not traditionally one of the hormonal acne cures but an acne cure for all types of this annoying skin condition. The results can be positive but the negative side effects of this medication make it a last resort as far as many physicians are concerned. But, in times of need, it does work and works well so if it is needed, care must be taken to not become pregnant during treatment.
There are quite a few hormonal cures that work and will clear up your skin. Severe acne can be a devastating blow to a person’s self esteem and quality of life. Clearing up their skin is a small way to make a large impact on a person’s life. Most doctors feel very satisfied if they can improve a patients well being and self esteem by giving them blemish free skin.
